The Advancement Office hosts two special speaker events on a bi-annual basis, The Moss Speaker and the McMillan Character Education Speaker. Both events attract high-profile speakers.
The J. Barry Moss Distinguished Speaker Series
The Series is named after Mr. Moss, a beloved former teacher, debate coach, Upper School principal and Dean of Faculty, who was a prominent part of life at Kinkaid for over 40 years until his death in 2005. The focus of the Series is Civil Discourse in a Democracy, a topic that includes a number of the skills and values so important to Mr. Moss as a teacher: clear and convincing written expression, public speaking and debate, the development of analytical skills, service to others, and the commitment to excellence. The Series will feature a broad range of speakers, including scholars, journalists, business leaders, and those in public service.
The McMillan Character Education Speaker Series
In 2005, the Hrncir Family founded the Hrncir Character Education Speaker Series to help promote character development, integrity, enthusiasm, love of youth and athletics. Betty and John Hrncir have two sons, Garrett and Trent. The family has a great interest in athletics and character development, which is what inspired them to create this series.
In 2010, the series was renamed in honor of Coach Garry McMillan, long time coach, teacher and mentor at Kinkaid. Coach Mac embodies all the aspects that the Hrncir family envisioned this speaker series would be about – most importantly his passion for athletics, youth and Kinkaid. In addition to coaching his teams to 16 SPC football titles, Coach Mac has coached almost every sport at Kinkaid and has served as a mentor to students, teachers, coaches and alumni.
