Director of DEI Announcement

Dear Kinkaid School community,

Over the past ten weeks, an eight-member Kinkaid committee facilitated an exhaustive search for Kinkaid’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) that drew nearly 200 applicants from around the world. After four finalists visited campus in late February and early March, the committee incorporated valuable input from all constituent groups (faculty, staff, administration, students, parents, and trustees) and ultimately came to a unanimous recommendation.

We are excited to announce Ms. Mujidat Shotonwa will be appointed the School's Director of DEI, effective July 1, 2021. Mujidat brings an incredible amount of independent school experience to Kinkaid, both from her professional work, as well as that of a former independent school student.

Mujidat currently serves as the Assistant Director of the Preparatory Component for Prep for Prep, a non-profit in New York City that works closely with independent schools to support promising students of color from underserved and underrepresented communities in developing their leadership skills. She has been with Prep for Prep for nearly a decade, also having served as guidance counselor and teacher, working closely with students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Prior to Prep, Mujidat was a clinician, tutor, and counselor, helping children with emotional difficulties in the context of school, imparting learning strategies to students, and providing coaching and therapy to both children and adults.

Earning her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, Mujidat also earned a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Brooklyn College.

On a personal level, Mujidat enjoys reading, cooking, staying active with dance and double-dutch, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Among other things, she expressed excitement about warmer weather and exploring Houston, particularly through art and food.

One of Mujidat’s many strong references shared that, “She embodies the values of integrity, courage, excellence, and commitment.” Moreover, her professional experiences melding the tenets of mental health, education, and equity will help our School continue to grow. Please read Mujidat’s entire statement here.

I hope you will join me in enthusiastically welcoming Mujidat to the Kinkaid family.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Eades
Head of School
