At a recent state publication contest, the Kinkaid School Falcon Newspaper Staff won 15 overall awards and an Award of Achievement ranking for their division. For the second consecutive year, the newspaper staff had two students share a "Tops in Texas" award, which is the highest honor for a student to win. Congratulations to the following Upper School students:

Some important information now on the website:

The Kinkaid School Summer Reading Lists have been posted online for incoming grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grades. All lists have all been listed on one page for easy navigation for mobile devices! A gold "Summer Reading Lists" button is located at the bottom right of the kinkaid.org home page for easy reference throughout the summer.

The School Store information has been moved to the Campus Life section of the new website. Book & Supply Order Lists & Book Buy Back information is now available online on the School Store section of the webpage.

Congratulations to Kinkaid School seniors Jimmy Greenwood and Emily Robinson. They were recently presented with the "Senior Awards" given at the Distinguished Alumni awards presentation.

The Kinkaid Alumni Association established two annual awards to be presented to a Kinkaid School graduating senior boy and a graduating senior girl who best represent dedication to Kinkaid through academic, extra-curricular and volunteer activities. Nominations were received from both faculty members and students for this award.

Kinkaid School Physics teacher Lara Cross incorporates "gaming" into the lesson structure of an Astronomy Unit

Kinkaid School Physics teacher Lara Cross is trying something new in teaching her Astronomy class this year. In her current unit, Ms. Cross decided to try to "gamify" the unit. This teaching method is done in combination with a flipped teaching approach, because she is not giving formal lectures to the entire class.

The class is working from a wiki as a way to give students some choices of options and can have them link quickly to other resources online. Essentially, the goal of the unit is for the students to learn about black holes, how black holes connect to what lessons previously covered in class, and how scientists go about finding black holes.

The students are on a quest to find "The Black Holes of Doom", and they have various adventures and tasks along the way. As the students go through the lesson, they earn points for completing activities that may be taking notes on a video, doing research, answering review questions, doing lab activities, or creating alternative presentations of the material. Some of the activities are required in order to proceed, while others are optional.

For the review questions, which are basically drills to make sure they understand the information, the class is using activities at quia.com, which allows the teacher to input a key so that the computer can check the students' work. The class has a leaderboard so that the students can see both their own points and their classmates'. The class is having a competition to see who earns the most points by a certain date.

The Astronomy students are very motivated, especially now that they have the leaderboard. The competitive aspect really helps keep the students excited about learning the lesson!
