The Kinkaid School Sporting Clays Benefit
Now in its ninth year, the Kinkaid School Sporting Clays Benefit is held every spring and alumni, parents, grandparents and friends are welcome to register and shoot in the tournament. Hosted by the event steering committe, the shoot takes place at a local shooting range and typically begins with a noon lunch and games to be followed by the tournament. Afterward, participants and volunteers enjoy snacks and beverages at the awards ceremony.
Proceeds from the benefit go toward the Steven Hetrick Interim Term Scholarship Endowment, established in 2001 in memory of Terry and (Nurse) Bonnie Hetrick's son. This fund was created to help deserving students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to participate fully in the programs offered during Interim Term.
Eighth Annual Kinkaid Sporting Clays Benefit: A Huge Success!
On Friday, April 9, a record number of Kinkaid alumni, parents and friends came out to the Greater Houston Gun Club (GHGC) in Missouri City, Texas to participate in the Eighth Annual Kinkaid Sporting Clays Benefit, honoring trustee emeritus J.B. “Bubba” Coskey. Shooters began arriving at the GHGC at noon to enjoy a cajun lunch catered by Ragin Cajun and took advantage of the "Two-man Flurry Competition" to warm up in preparation for the 1:30 p.m. shoot. With 29 teams and 116 shooters, participants completed the two 12-station, 50-clay courses, around 4:30 p.m., only after enjoying a turn at the "Shotgun Shoot-off", in hopes of winning a Ruger ‘Red Label’ shotgun. Thanks to the generosity of the Kinkaid community and 2010 Sponsors the Sporting Clays Benefit raised more than $45,000 that will be directly contributed to the Steven Hetrick Interim Term Scholarship Endowment. Such a successful tournament could not have been possible without the 2010 Steering Committee: David Werlin ’96, Chair, Chad Wetmore ‘91, Co-Chair, and committee members Holden Burrow ‘87, Thad Davis ‘91, Patrick Elkins ‘94, Ramsey Evans ‘92, Lex Hochner ‘99, David Lucke ‘84, David Ott ‘97, Clint Wetmore ’88 and Carson Wilson ‘98. A special thanks to Kinkaid parent, Katherine Jones and alumnus Maudie Werlin ‘04 for volunteering at the "Shotgun Shoot-off" station.
Following the tournament, a number of the shooters returned to the "Two-man Flurry Competition", while others enjoyed food and drinks in the Pavilion, in anticipation of the awards reception. Charlie Christ and Roy Horlock won the "Two-Man Flurry Competition" and were awarded two Yeti coolers. "Shotgun Shoot-off" winners included first place winner, Wil Brown ‘95, second place winner, Doak Brown ’92 and third place winner, David Werlin ’96. Congratulations to all our tournament winners!
