2013 JV Field Hockey
Junior Varsity Field Hockey Philosophy and Strategy
The Junior Varsity team will review what was learned in Middle School in all aspects, however, we will begin to push them to do everything more precisely and at a faster pace. After reviewing what was learned in previous years, we will expand in each area and then expect more responsibility and freethinking from each athlete. We want our Junior Varsity team to be a strong feeder program for Varsity, where the players have a strong skill set and enough confidence to step on the field with Varsity if they make the team.
Each day, it will be important for the athletes to work on fundamental skills that include: ball handling, passing, receiving, dribbling, and shooting at a fast and challenging pace. The Junior Varsity will work heavily on possession and learn to transfer the ball around the field. We will continue to build their confidence in the various systems we play and positions on the field. We want our Junior Varsity team to fully understand the concepts of forcing and pressing and how to execute both individually and as a team. The “Self Pass” rule will be introduced at this level and we will teach it and work on drills to fully understand how to use it. During corners at the Junior Varsity level, athletes should have an idea what position they excel at and begin to fine tune their skill. They will also be able to execute more difficult corner plays on offense and know how to come up with and clear the ball on defense.
On offense and defense, we want our Junior Varsity to be strong and confident with the ball. We will do many of the same drills as they did in Middle school, however, they will be in smaller and more confined spaces. We also will incorporate more game like scenarios and apply pressure to the athletes. It will be important that the athletes learn how to react in these situations as individuals and as a team. We will continue to urge athletes to use communication and take it one step further and teach them to be able to direct teammates on the field.
After being on the Junior Varsity, the athletes should have a large skill set they are confident using and be ready to take it to the next level. We want them to have fun and continue enjoying the game and be able to contribute in a large way to our Varsity team.
