Boys Basketball Program Philosophy

The philosophy of the Kinkaid Boys Basketball program is focused around the foundation of “team”.  In all aspects of coaching, both on and off the floor, the ideals of commitment to, service toward, and respect for one's team and teammates will be stressed.

Program focus begins first with the “student” in student athlete.  A certain level of commitment in the classroom must be maintained to have the opportunity to participate in practice or games.  In handling one’s responsibility in the classroom, players will show a commitment and respect to their team by being available each day to improve in their individual skill and respective roles on the team.  Another aspect of educating the individual is a commitment to serving both the Kinkaid and greater Houston communities.  Being a good teammate requires sacrifice, and the ability to serve others around you with time, effort and ability helps enhance this quality.  The program stresses community involvement within the School, and also coordinates a one-day holiday service project for varsity athletes.  Through participation in these activities, the coaching staff believes a greater sense of appreciation, compassion and respect for all people can be developed.

On-floor behavior will be centered on service to teammates, respect for the game and everyone involved in allowing the team the opportunity to compete:  referees, the scorers table, fans, and the opposing team.  In all circumstances leading up to and during the game, players will be respectful to people, property and equipment that is allowing them team an opportunity to play.  During the game, a healthy respect for the officials, fans, and the opposing team is expected.

It is the goal of the boys basketball program to instill confidence and courage in every player before graduating from Kinkaid.  Committed coaches work year-round to encourage focus on three things:  committing time and energy to program ideals and teammates; serving teammates and community with time, energy and ability; and having respect and appreciation for all aspects of the completed journey.  Through this encouragement, it is the hope of the entire coaching staff that every player committing time to the program becomes a player with strong character and honor.
