Long-time Kinkaid faculty members John Germann and Barbara Cooney tell me that when they first arrived at Kinkaid in the late 1960's and early 1970’s, people here were talking about the land between our campus and Stillforest. So for at least the last 35-40 years Kinkaid faculty, staff, parents, and trustees and perhaps alumni have been thinking about the possibility of acquiring some or all of the land on our western boundary. On September 21, the possible became real as the purchase of the land was finalized.
What does this acquisition mean for Kinkaid? It means everything! The opportunity for a school of Kinkaid’s size, stature, age, and location (in the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country) to secure a large parcel of adjacent property (24.6 acres) is nothing short of extraordinary. This purchase, which will eventually increase the size of the campus by more than sixty percent, means immediate improvements to our campus and transformative change for the future.
The new property will impact our children today and for generations to come. The Board of Trustees will ultimately develop the long-range plan with a focused working committee comprised of trustees, faculty, staff, alumni and other visionary leaders. Our community -- parents, faculty, staff and alumni -- will have an opportunity to play an important role in helping us identify priorities as we move forward with the planning process. In the longer term, we will have the time to plan for needs the School will face in the coming years, which include a new upper school building, a new cafeteria, new state of the art outdoor learning center that will educate, challenge, and inspire all our students, new athletic space and fields as well as additional green areas around the campus. In the shorter term (the next one to two years), we hope to make initial changes that will address the access issues and parking needs that the School currently faces. Moreover, this acquisition, which allows Kinkaid to control its future without being landlocked, means that the School will remain in its location for generations to come.
You shortly will receive a special edition of the Kinkaid magazine devoted to the Tomorrow’s Promise Capital Campaign that will fund the land acquisition and to the initial improvements planned for the next two years. I hope you enjoy reading about the plans. This is an unprecedented opportunity, and enormously exciting. I can’t wait to get started!
The School is very pleased to have Leslie Roemer Labanowski ’02 as our Alumni Activities Manager. Since joining the Advancement Staff in June, she has accomplished many great things thanks to her enthusiasm, her connections with fellow alumni and her ability to effectively handle multiple responsibilities. I hope you have an opportunity to get to know her very soon, if you haven’t already had that pleasure
The accomplishments of our alumni – 5,600 graduates strong – are one of the strongest measures of the value of a Kinkaid education. Thank you for making the world a better and more interesting place, and for helping the School earn such high regard in the community.

Don’t let SJS beat us again!
The 2010-2011 Kinkaid Annual Fund is underway! Last year, 26%% of Kinkaid Alumni participated, raising over $600,000, a remarkable show of support! However, St. Johns beat us in the challenge by hitting 28%%. Our goal for this year is 30%%, and we can't reach it without your help!
Go online now and make your gift to avoid extra mailings and help the school save paper and administrative costs. You can make a pledge or set up installments. Your final payment is not due until July 31, 2011. As you know, the Annual Fund helps provide the extras that make Kinkaid so special. Your gift will support today's students and faculty.
For more information or to make a gift, please visit www.kinkaid.org/support.
Let the competition begin!
This year we are introducing two new competitions for reunion class giving to the Annual Fund. First, each reunion class (1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001) will have the opportunity to set the Annual Fund participation standard for future reunion classes to beat: Class of 1991 sets the bar for future 20th Reunion classes, etc.
Second, all reunion classes will have a separate challenge: the class with the highest participation rate will be recognized at the Distinguished Alumni Award reception on Friday, May 6th and a special something will be delivered to your class party on Saturday night, May 7th of Reunions!
